Glucagon is a vital hormone that plays a quiet but powerful role in maintaining the body’s energy balance. While insulin often receives the most attention in discussions about blood sugar control, glucagon works behind the scenes as insulin’s natural counterpart. Produced by specialized alpha cells in the pancreas, glucagon is released when blood glucose levels fall too low. Its primary job is to signal the liver to release stored glucose into the bloodstream.
